Gourlay Steell, who lived and died in Edinburgh, succeeded Sir Edwin Landseer as official painter of animals to Queen Victoria.
This painting depicts a work horse grazing on a Sunday beside the Union Canal Basin (subsequently filled in) with a view of the west side of Edinburgh Castle beyond.
