The design for this wine-cooler can be found on plate XXIV of Thomas Hope’s seminal Household Furniture and Interior Decoration published in 1807.
It is described as… ‘Wine cooler, in the shape of an antique bath or lavacrum.’
This formed a record of the furnishings of Hope’s own house in Duchess Street, London. Given that no other wine cooler of this model is known, and that the quality of the carving and execution accord closely to provenanced pieces from Duchess street, it seems at least likely that this piece was also Hope’s own example from Duchess Street.
